This is the end... of down under

We've booked our tickets for Bali! We land on the 15th of April. We'll be working at the Holiday Inn until the 12th, then off to Darwin to catch our flight and move on to the third and final part of the trip. Very excited. We've gone six months in the same country and without wearing our backpacks... It's gona be a strange feeling to put them on again!

Staying it is!

We landed the job at the Holiday Inn in the Kakadu National Park. We started work on Wednesday already. Thomas is in charge of cleaning all public areas (reception, staircases, conference rooms, toilets etc) and I am waitressing in the hotel restaurant. We have great accomodation, with fridge, tv, our own bathroom and even air conditioning. We love it! But for the moment we have completely opposite shifts as Thomas works mornings and I work nights. But we get to see each other for an hour or two in the early afternoon :D The hotel... [Lire la suite]

Staying?Leaving?

We love to improvise but these days it's just been ridiculous. Since we haven't worked since mid-December, we've spent nearly all the money we earned while working in Australia. We were hoping to sell the van quickly at a good price in Darwin, and then head off to Asia. But it's still the rainy season here and the tourist season doesn't start till another good month. So no buyers for the van :(  Before we headed up here we contacted a hotel in the Kakady National Park (about 2h from Darwin) but they said it was too early to... [Lire la suite]

End of Red Center

We finished the crossing of Australia under the rain! Turns out a cyclone was forming above Darwin, just as we were arriving. So unfortunately the visits we wanted to do on the last two days of the road trip had to be cancelled - no Litchfield National Park and no Katherine gorge. But let's go back a little. Last I wrote, we were heading to Uluru (Ayer's Rock). We headed off for Uluru in the morning, and expected to arrive early afternoon. About 100km before getting there, a car coming from the other direction flagged us down. We... [Lire la suite]

The great outback

This is it! With a brand new battery, a new air filter, new engine oil, lots of food and almost 50 liters of water, we started our great journey from Adelaide to Darwin yesterday. That's 3000 kilometers of straight line through the desert. Which is not so desert like this year with all the rainfall since last year, there's green sprouts popping up everywhere! But it is SCORCHING hot, and we're drinking water all day long. We're currently stopped in Cooper Pedy. The Opal mining capital of the world apparently and the stage for the... [Lire la suite]

Great Ocean Road

Since Thursday we have left Melbourne, heading towards Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road. It's a great drive, with beautiful views of the coast.    Just to drop a few names : Great Otway national park (did some ziplining there, thank you family for a great smartbox!), twelve apostles marine park (see photo above), stevenson falls... We've had our first car troubles :) Not too serious (I think!)... Basically every morning our battery is flat and we need someone to jump start us. We didn't have jump cables at first so we... Australia Day

The 26th of january was Australia Day. We spent the day in Cronulla, a suburb south of Sydney. We were woken up early as some people were already around their bbq, cracking open a beer at eight am. The beach was jam packed with people. Everyone was going around with at least one flag on them, either oz flag shorts, or tshirt, or hat, or swimsuit, or painted on etc.  We stayed at a friend's place and followed tradition, we had beer and a bbq. Went to the beach for a quick swim a few times during the day, and listened to a big... [Lire la suite]

And we're back in reality!

The ten day meditation course is over. I am allowed to speak again :D It was a really tough ten days, but overall a wonderful experience that I can only recommend. 17 hour days of which 11 are spent meditating. The rest of the time, no talking and no reading/writing/listening to music etc... just time with yourself. For more info: www.dhamma.org So now we are back in Sydney, back where it all started. It's a strange feeling to be back here 5 months later, so much has happened in the meantime! We plan to stay here for a few days to... [Lire la suite]

See you in two weeks!

We've slowly been making our way back towards Sydney, stopping for a rest in Griffith (too hot: 42 degrees) and in Orange (cold and stormy).  In 2 days we'll be starting our 10 day meditation course (Vipassana) up in the Blue Mountains, so don't expect any news until at least the 20th of January! Wish me luck!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Merry Christmas! I hope everyone had a very merry christmas and was not stuck in some snowed-in airport across Europe! Thomas and I spent Christmas in Temora, a small country town about 1h away from Wagga-Wagga. We are staying with my friend Kristy and her family. We had a great Australian Christmas experience. Night out on the pub for the 24th, with all the men getting very rowdy after a few drinks (we saw one guy pull staples out of his arm! don't know how they got there in the first place...). On the 25th, well, it... [Lire la suite]
