Life is what's happening while you're busy making other plans

We left St George on Sunday morning. We drove to Brisbane. It was quite strange seeing real motorways and lots of cars again. We hadn't seen so many cars since we left Sydney mid-september! We just stayed overnight in Brisbane. Just enough to see the fake beach that the city has set-up near the river. Very impressive, there are 3/4 pools, with sand and lots of fountains. All free! Great for families with small kids. In the evening we ate sandwiches by our van, staring up at the bats flying over our heads. We decided to drive down by... [Lire la suite]

Still in St George

So the time has passed, and not that many melons have been packed! The weather in Queensland this year is just completely off the charts. They have never had this much rain in years. Which makes picking melons difficult. So we've had a lot of days off, just hanging around the camp ground, watching movies, reading books etc. We did have a couple of intense days when the weather was good, we packed for 11 hours a day for three days straight. that was really tiring, and despite wearing gloves, my fingertips started to bleed! you'd... Arrival in St George

The work was coming to an end at Charters Towers, so we decided it was time to look for another job in order to jump from this one to the next. It turned out that one of the couples working with us had a job lined up but that they weren't going to take, since they were going back home. So we called up and we were able to take their place! So after four full weeks of grape picking/packing, we said our goodbyes to our workmates and hit the road again. Only 1000 km to cover this time! We left on saturday morning, expecting the job to... Week 4 of grape picking/packing

No I'm not dead, i'm just busy packing grapes! It's been a busy four weeks. work starts at 6am and normally ends at 3pm. We got a lot of rain two weeks ago which meant the boys had the day off, while we girls continued packing what the boys had picked the day before. the rain hurt the crop pretty badly so since then our work in the shed has got harder because we have to cut out all the rotten bits... yuck, lots of maggots and other not nice things.  The other workers organised a little suprise birthday party for me on saturday.... Road trip to Queensland and grape work

After our three days work in Victoria we decided that we would have more luck finding work in Queensland... which is up North of Sydney :s We called up the national harvest line and managed to get a grape picking job up in Queensland. So we hopped in the car and drove off... 2000 km ! On our first day of the road trip, we took only track roads. It was pretty tough and after driving 9 hours, we had travelled only 500 kms ! We actually lost 100 kms at the end as well because the road we took was flooded. And I don't... [Lire la suite]

First work experience in Australia

Very positive! We had the chance of working for a very kind farmer called Rowan. His wheat field contained some other crop close to wheat but not exactly wheat (i'm sorry Rowan, I cannot remember the name of the crop!). He needed to get rid of this crop in order to be sure that he could sell his harvest at a good price. So we had to walk through the fields to go spotting the "bad" crop and pull it out. I don't have the photos here to upload but i'll upload them next time so you can see the difference between the two crops.... [Lire la suite]

Our super equipped van!

I'll start with our van since in my last post I promised that I'd put up some photos. We went shopping to buy all the stuff we would need for living on the road: cutlery, pots and pans, camping stove, solar shower, jerrycan of water and petrol, dry foods etc. So here is our beautiful van as we bought it :       Here it is packed with stuff and wood after our shopping spree : Here you can see me working hard to build our fold-out bed : and in the next two photos you can see the van... Sydney hesitations

More than ten days in Australia and still no new post ! I didn't want to put up a new post without any photos and truth be told, I took my first australian photos only 4 days ago ! So what have we been up to and what can be said about Australia so far ? Well, we stayed 9 days with our couchsurfer Steve and his daughter Cassioppee. It was great to be settled and get out of the pack-your-bag-every-2-days routine ! On our second night in Sydney there was a couchsurfing party in a bar in town which was great... [Lire la suite]

03 septembre 2010

We finally arrived in Sydney after a long journey of 39hours. Surprisingly we are not too jet-lagged. During our 12 hour stop in Los Angeles, we managed to check in our luggage early and go into town. We went to Santa Monica beach. Proof here below with this photo of a very cool surfer ;)                                   We arrived in Sydney at 10 am on Thursday. We're couchsurfing and our host couldn't be home until 6pm, so... [Lire la suite]
