End of Bolivia

After La Paz, we headed on to Copacabana (not the one in Brazil, which in fact is named after the town in Bolivia) which is on the lake Titicaca. The bus ride took a little longer than expect since on the way there we had to cross a bridge. Unfortunately one of the pillars of the bridge had fallen, so it was too dangerous to allow the traffic to use the bridge. So the traffic had to pass through the "river". Which wasn't exactly a river but still deep enough and muddy enough for half of the cars/trucks/buses passing through... [Lire la suite]

Samaipata - La Paz

No news for a while there... we arrived in Samaipata thinking we would stay two-three days and ended up staying a whole week. Samaipata is a small village about 130 km from Santa Cruz. Starting to be a bit touristy but it remains really peacefull. So we stayed there to rest... just reading and playing sudoku. A little holiday within our big holiday. After a week we decided it was time to move on, a very difficult decision I must admit. Especially considering that to get to our next destination, La Paz, it took us 28 hours of travel.... Santa Cruz

We headed next to Santa Cruz, on Sunday. We arrived in full Carnaval festivities. The 3 most important days of Carnaval are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The difference with Carnaval in Santa Cruz is that they don't only have a big water fight... they also have a big paint fight. When we arrived on Sunday, most of the streets of the city center were closed off to traffic. The bus dropped us off at the beggining of a street and told us we had to walk all the way up the street to get to the city center and find a hostal. He forgot to... [Lire la suite]

Potosi - Sucre

After Uyuni, we headed quickly on to Potosi. Potosi was a huge town, due to it's Cerro Rico, a mountain full of silver (among other things). Our first impression of Potosi wasn't very nice, it's full of very small streets, and there are way too many cars on the road. The result is very noisy and polluted. But once we'd left the big bagpacks in the hostal and walked around the center we were able to enjoy the city a little more. Especially on saturday and sunday when there is much less traffic. We went to visit the mines to see how... [Lire la suite]

So many things to tell. Where do I start? We took the bus from Tupiza on Monday to go to Uyuni. There are about 200 km between both towns. It took us 7 hours to get to Uyuni. We saw some beautiful and very different landscapes, alternating between mountains, plains and valleys. And once in a while, in the middle of nowhere, after having driven for hours without seeing any living thing appeared two, three houses and a bunch of llamas. I don't know how these people get by, they are completely disconnected from the world, their only... [Lire la suite]

Into Bolivia

So, as per my previous post we spent the night in Humahuaca, and the next day we hopped on to another bus, this time to head directly to the Bolivian border. Approx 3 hours to La Quiaca, the last Argentinian town before the border. We expected to spend about 10-15 minutes at the border to get our passports stamped but we were just a little too optimistic. Piece of advice if you want to cross the border at La Quiaca, be armed with patience, a sweater and a raincoat. We spent 2 hours in the queue to leave Argentina. Argentinians have to...
