Goodbye Thailand - Hello Laos

I'm running a bit behind! After Chiang Mai, we headed slowly back down to Bangkok, stopping in Sukothai and Ayuthaya on the way for some cultural visits. We rented bikes and cycled our way around the ruins under a scorching hot sun. Back in Bangkok I saw my brother who made the most of a business trip to drop by and say hello. It was great to see him and he treated me to a l-o-v-e-l-y massage and diner by the river.  Our time with Thomas' parents was up, three weeks just flashed by. We said our goodbyes and as they headed to... [Lire la suite]

Pai, Chiang Mai and election day with the in-laws

After these three intense days we headed back to Thailand and decided to go straight back up north. Which meant a journey of over 24 hours. We took the bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok (leaving at 8 am, arriving at 7 pm), then from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (9pm to 6am the next day) then from Chiang Mai to Pai (7am to 11am). Congratulations to the in-laws who made it without a complaint and without even being tired! I was worse off than they were, on the third day of our visiting Angkor I took a 5-hour long nap and after arriving in Pai... [Lire la suite]

Cambodia with the in-laws

After Pai we rushed back down to Bangkok to pick up the in-laws in. With them we headed straight for Cambodia. Only one stop planned there: Siem Reap (to see the famous Angkor). Angkor is absolutely massive and you could spend weeks visiting every building on the site. We opted for a three day entry ticket. The first day we started out with some of the “smaller” buildings but nonetheless very impressive with beautiful sculptures. The second day we visited the most famous buildings on the site (Angkor Vat, Angkor Tom and Ta Prom).... [Lire la suite]

Bangkok - Chiang Mai - Pai

Thomas left the hospital after a week. He was still feeling a bit weak so we stayed another three days in Bangkok so that he could get back on his feet.  We then made the 11-hour journey by bus to Chiang Mai. I was a little worried because it's been a while now since we've taken a bus on such a long distance, but in fact it was very comfortable and the road was fine all the way through. We even got some great american action movies in Thai. Chiang Mai is a pretty little town. Here we decided to take some classes. We took three... [Lire la suite]

A long weekend in Burma...

That's all we'll have done! Thomas got dengue fever and had to be sent to Bangkok after spending 3 days under the covers in a small hotel in Yangoon. I have to say that our insurance was great. They took care of everything. In a few hours we were in a plane for Bangkok, someone was waiting for us just as we stepped off the plane and took us through immigration, picked up our luggage. We were driven to the hospital in an ambulance. The doctors were all lovely and since Thomas gets a private room, I get to sleep on the couch. This is... [Lire la suite]

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia

For the past week we have been in Kuala Lumpur. We left Tawau, in Borneo, quite quickly as with Thomas' ear infection there weren't many activies we could do. Usually we don't like big cities too much and try to avoid them but I have to admit that we have been quite charmed by Kuala Lumpur. Yes, it's a big city but it doesn't feel over-crowded. The streets are not full of motorbikes zipping away in all directions and loud honking noises. It feels more organised, it has a clean and effective metro system. And it's one huge melting pot:... Derawan - Kalimantan

The further away you go from Bali, the more difficult it gets to find indonesian people who speak English. And I must admit that the language barrier complicates the travelling quite a bit. Especially when arriving on the island of Kalimantan. Kalimantan is the world's third largest island. Our complete south east asia guide book has a meager 10 pages of info on Kalimantan. Needless to say much info we had not. We were lucky though and met two indonesian men who spoke good english and helped us organise our trip on Kalimantan. The... [Lire la suite]
