This is it!

Our last weekend in Latin America! We made it back to Mexico DF this afternoon. We have 3 days to visit the town. Then we'll be off to the second part of our trip: AUSTRALIA! We leave on Tuesday morning and we'll arrive on Thursday morning in Sydney. It's gona be one long journey.6 hours from Mexico to Los Angeles (with a stop in Phoenix) and 18 hours from Los Angeles to Sydney (with a stop in Auckland). Oh, and a 12h wait in Los Angeles. So that's a total of 36 hours! Edit: We spent three great days in Mexico. The town is... [Lire la suite]

Cough cough

Not much to tell about the last week... We are laaaazy. Spent a few days in Oaxaca, nice town where people like to party. There's always lots of people in the streets any time of day or night. Then we spent a day in the bus to get to Mexico DF. Spent just one night there and then hopped on a bus again to get to Real de Catorce. 3 buses actually. 1 to Matahuela, 1 that drops you off about 4 kms before Real de Catorce, and finally the last bus which drives you through the 4km long tunnel, only access road to Real de Catorce. Super... [Lire la suite]

Diving, shopping...

After spending a few days in San Cristobal de las Casas, a pretty colonial town where we lazed about not doing much, we moved on to Puerto Escondido. It took a a long 12 hour night bus ride. It had been a while since we had taken night buses and it brought back memories of Argentina and Peru.Nothing much to do in Puerto Escondido apart from diving, surfing and a little bit of shopping. So Thomas went diving. I tagged along for a bit of snorkelling but as it had rained the night before there wasn't much visibility for snorkeling. So I... [Lire la suite]

<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } --> Since arriving at the town of Palenque, we have left the Yucatan region and entered into the Chiapas region. With Tabasco, it is one of the poorest regions of Mexico. And you can tell. Especially when arriving from Yucatan. Things are a little less organised, there are more “messed up” people in the streets, ie – drunk men sleeping on pavement, crazy people wandering the streets. But I'm making this sounds worse than it actually... [Lire la suite]

Chichen Itza, Campeche

We just arrived today in the city of Palenque. Our friends Pavla and Marc were waiting for us at the bus station. We met Pavla and Marc in Nicaragua and travelled with them for a few weeks. We parted with them in Guatemala, just before my mom arrived. They left Holland in 2007, thinking of travelling for one year in asia. They ended up staying 2 years in Asia and have now been in Latin America for almost one year now! It was great to meet up with them again, we just spent the evening chatting and playing cards. After Tulum we went... [Lire la suite]

Mexico... Mexiiiiiiiiiiico!

That's it for Central America. We are now in North America, which means that we are getting closer and closer to the end of the first part of our trip! We left Guatemala on the 29th, crossing Belize to go into Mexico. For the first time during our trip, we crossed two borders in one day (Guatemala-Belize, Belize-Mexico) and to our great surprise the border officers in Belize and Mexico were smily and polite! We had been used to a much more severe treatment at borders. So that was a nice change! Not much to say about Belize,... [Lire la suite]

Helloooo! I have very much left the blog to itself lately but it's only because access to the Internet has not been available. So here's the full recap of the past two weeks: - arrival of my mum in Guatemala City - three days spent around the Lago de Atitlan. We stayed in Panajachel, and saw the markets of Solola and Chichicastenango. Solola's market was quite a show of colours. It was full of locals in their traditional dress. A real typical market. The market in Chichicastenango was also interesting but much less authentic. It... [Lire la suite]

Quick update

More than a week without news! My mum arrived safely and we've been travelling with her since. We spent a few days around the Lago de Atitlan and saw two beatiful markets full of locals in their traditional dresses. We spent a few days in Semuc Champey, in the middle of the thick forest. I'll write a longer post with some photos as soon as I find some decent internet! I don't think it will be before a good week.Next up, the ruins of Aguateca and La Ceiba, and of course, TIKAL!

Guatemala - Antigua

From Copan, we headed straight into Guatemala. Nothing to say about the border, except that we'd never crossed a border that quickly! very quick and easy, apart from the fact that once again we had to pay a tourist tax despite the fact that the EU has an agreement with both Honduras and Guatemala which states that EU citizens don't need to pay any taxes to either enter or leave the country... but bygones! We are staying in Antigua rather than Guatemala city. As I've said before we don't really enjoy the big polluted capitals and on... [Lire la suite]
