In Monteverde

Ha! I know it looked like it, but this blog isn't dead! (yet!)So, since I last wrote... I took 2 flights to get to San Jose in Costa Rica, where I expected to spend 1 or 2 days alone before my boyfriend arrived from Panama. But there he was at the airport, waiting for me when I arrived! that was a very nice suprise. Let's be honest, we didn't do anything in San Jose. My boyfriend was a bit ill and I wasn't very motivated by the big city of San Jose. So we spent two days lazing about in our hostel. And to be fair, it was pouring... [Lire la suite]

Recap of the USA

I've been quiet for a very long time!! i have a great excuse though! If you don't have a computer here, it's really hard to have access to the internet. There are a million free wifi zones, but it's byoc (bring your own computer). So anyways, now I have a netbook (yay) and pretty much access to the internet in any hotel or cafe. Here's a quick recap of my trip in the USA with my sis:- 3 days in LA- 2 days in Las Vegas- flight over the grand canyon- 4 days of road trip up the coast to San Francisco- 6 days in San Francisco- 1 day of... california, land of excess

sooo, daphne hasn't written in a while and actually it's all my fault... me: emilie - sister and first guest of honnor on this blog, a mission i have entrusted myself with in a tentative apologetic gesture to all of the followers of this blog who have been wondering what the heck daphne was up to these days... since it is her blog though, i have however decided to leave to daphne the task of giving you all the details about what we've been up to in the last three weeks, and i shall concentrate on sharing with you my main... LAS VEGAS

What can I say about Las Vegas? The city where everything is just too much! We took a greyhound bus to get to Vegas. We had booked a room at the Imperial Palace. We had a suite with a  "luv tub", we werent sure what that meant. That meant we had a huge oval tub in our room... not in the bathroom, directly in our room! There were mirrors around the tub and on the ceiling on top of the tub and of course, on the ceiling on top of the bed! Our hotel had a swimming pool but we didnt get a chance to use it. We did so... IN LOS ANGELES!!!

YAY! here I am in the USA! After so many years of planning with my sister... I was a little nervous before taking the plane because I didn't have the address of the girl at whose place we were going to stay, and I had a transfer in Houston. I remember that when I went to the states with my parents when I was ten we waited for hours at immigration. When I got to the airport for the check-in I was told that I would have problems at immigration if I didn't have an address to give them, and that at Houston I would have to get my bag back... Quito

After Quilotoa, we headed to Quito. We were warned by almost everyone we met... Quito is THE pickpocket town. One guy even had his camera snatched out of his hand as he was taking a photo. So we were warned and we arrived prepared. Bags covered in their raincoats so no access to the pockets possible. Little bag with money hidden under our shirts. And we got by ok, so far, nothing to report! The old town of Quito is very pretty, it has a lot of charm but small. We covered the visit in one afternoon. We're staying in the new town... in... Latacunga - Quilotoa

Next stop after Baños was Latacunga. Completely uninteresting town. This was the first town in Ecuador were we didn't feel comfortable. Every other town we had been in was welcoming and had charm. Not Latacunga! But it was just a stopover to go to Quilotoa. Quilotoa is a tiny village of about 15 houses next to a beautiful lake in the crater of a volcanoe. There is nothing to do in the village and every house is a hostal/restaurant/souvenir shop. And although at first the people are a little annoying cos they want you to choose their... [Lire la suite]

Buses in South America

So far, we've done over 200 hours of bus, which is the equivalent of more than 8 full days. So there is quite a bit to say about buses in south america. The driver always has a "helper". Who is there to shout out the destination of the bus and it's stops to attract people, and to cash in the price of the ticket. Even if you get on the bus at the bus terminal, you don't actually need to buy your ticket beforehand, just get on the bus and at some point the helper will come asking for the fare.>The other day, we took a... Cuenca - Baños

After Guayaquil we headed to Cuenca. Beautiful little town with cobblestones.  We went to the museum del banco central. It's more of a museum for children, in fact there were about 3 different schools on visit when we were there. But it does have the great advantage of displaying 5 real shrunken heads. Very impressive. They are the size of a fist and all have long hair. There was a whole ritual to the shrinking of heads. They would shrink the heads of either murderers or ennemies. It wasn't clearly explained the shrinking method... [Lire la suite]

Vilcabamba - Guayaquil

So from Tumbes in Peru, we crossed the border into Ecuador. It's pretty straightforward on the peruvian side, but on the Ecuadorian side, you walk into the first town and no immigration post. It's actually 2km away, you have to get a taxi to get there! so we went in taxi, and the immigration post is in the middle of nowhere next to a motorway, and people have to queue outside in the scorching hot sun... after an hour's wait in the heat, we got our stamp and hopped on a bus to Loja. Not much to say about Loja, we slept in a hotel next... [Lire la suite]
