The end of Peru

After our experience with the money exchange guys in Iquitos, we left town pretty quickly ;)We took a plane to Lima the next day. Then a bus to Tumbes, just at the border with Ecuador. All in all, we spent a good 6 weeks in Peru, without even going near the region of Cusco! Peru is a very very culturally rich country with very diverse landscapes. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Scams to cheat tourists

In Iquitos on Thursday we were running out of peruvian cash, so while I waited in a restaurant, Thomas set out to exchange 150€ to peruvian soles. He came back a little while later, quite please with himself as he had managed to get an exchange rate of 3.8. Amazing since up until now the best rate we had ever gotten was 3.76 and the rest of the time we had had to fight to get 3.7. The only down part was that he had only been able to change 100€ because one of the 50€ bills had a little tear in it and the money exchange guy had refused... [Lire la suite]

Amazonia

After Chachapoyas, we headed to Yurimaguas, to finally reach the Amazon and go into the jungle.Making our way from Chachapoyas to Yurimaguas ended up being much more complicated than planned because heavy rains caused a landslide on the roads. This meant that our bus which started its journey in Trujillo and that we were waiting for in Chachapoyas, was stuck until the road was cleared of all the rocks and mud... It took a total of 24 hours! Needless to say, after a 10 hour wait, we hopped into a colectivo to get to Yurimaguas. We're... [Lire la suite]

Chiclayo - Chachapoyas

Long time no write! After a relaxed weekend at the beach in Huanchaco, we moved on to Chiclayo. In Lambayeque, a 10-minute drive from Chiclayo, are Peru's 2 most impressive museums. The museum of Sipan is incredibly rich due to the fact that archeologists found the tomb of an important Sipan , that was completely intact and had not been robbed. The museum is full of fine jewelry and ceramics. It took us a good 3 hours to see everything. Nothing much more to say about Chiclayo, not a particularly interesting town, though definitly... Huaraz - Trujillo

Next stop was Lima. To be honest, we didn't like it at all and we're not really looking to visit big noisy cities during our trip. So we stopped there for two days, but did not visit a thing! just rested and watched tv... :s Next stop was Huaraz. And I have to encourage everyone going to Peru to go there, or at least visit the region and do a trek. It is absolutely amazingly beautiful. Not the town, the Cordillera Negra and Cordillera Blanca. We signed up for a four day trek and had an amazing time. The trek in itself wasn't too... [Lire la suite]

Ica - Huacachina

After the Colca Canyon, we were back in Arequipa. We took a night bus to Nazca. We arrived at 6:30 am, grabbed a taxi to the airport and bought two tickets for a half hour flight over the mysterious Nazca lines. Amazing... really really impressive. Apart from the most famous drawings (the monkey, the spider) there are loads of lines and geometrical figures everywhere. It was expensive plane ride, but worth every penny! After that, we grabbed a bus on to Ica, and then a taxi to Huacachina. An oasis in the middle of the peruvian... [Lire la suite]

Canyon de Colca

Just a quick note to say that we just spent two days in the Canyon de Colca. We took a bus to Cabanaconde and went walking down the Canyon, to the river. 2h30 sliding down the rocky trail under a scorching hot sun. When we arrived at the river, we were very very suprised to see a hotel with little huts and a POOL. We were so tired from the walk down that we weren't able to resist jumping into the pool... and staying the night. The trek back up the next day was painful, but I'm very proud to say we went back up in 2h50, just 20 min... [Lire la suite]

Peru

The crossing of the border into Peru has a story. We wanted to take the bus from Copacabana (BOL) to Puno (PER). However there is a bit of political tension in Peru at the moment, so there are many strikes. This meant that the road from Bolivia to Peru was closed off. So the bus company organised a boat to get to the Peruvian border and then arranged for a bus to wait for us on the Peruvian side and drive us to Puno. But, they didn't calculate how long it would take for the boat to get to the border, which meant that we got to the... [Lire la suite]
